RANGERS EARN FIRST WIN IN OT

DUNNVILLE (Oct. 8) — Better late than never. The Glanbrook Rangers rode a late-stage rally into overtime to pick up their first victory of the PJHL season with a 2-1 decision over the Dunnville Mudcats.

Despite holding a decided edge in play for both the first and the third periods (let’s not mention the second frame for now), the Rangers were continually stymied by Mudcats’ netminder Auston Davison.  The Glanbrook goal drought, a frustrating span that extended back almost 120 minutes into their opening night loss to Grimsby, finally ended when Joel Wallace connected on a shot from the slot with just two minutes remaining in regulation time.   The Rangers rode that momentum into the overtime and Daniel Vella capped off the victorious comeback with his first goal of the season at 1:15 of the three-on-three extra frame.

“Our message was just to keep shooting, the next one would go in,” said Rangers’ coach Kevin Miket.  “We just had to keep battling and battling.”

The entire game was something of a battle, a very chippy contest particularly in the middle period when Glanbrook took six penalties, on one of which Dunnville’s Rylan Jacob broke through with a power-play goal to put the hosts up 1-0.   The Mudcats had a few more chances, but Rangers’ goalie Mitch Robinson held firm to keep the score within reach.

“We kind of lost our minds in the second period,” said Miket.  “But we got back to work in the third.”
